French

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.

If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.

Vision

Our vision is that our children can communicate efficiently with people from a French-speaking background, as well as develop a sound understanding and respect of cultural diversity.

How do we teach French?

At Penwortham, all the children start having French lessons from Year 1. They have weekly lessons with a specialist teacher all the way to Year 6. The subject is taught in a fun and engaging manner throughout.

At KS1 the lessons are mostly centred on the listening and speaking skills through the learning of French songs, rhymes and games. At KS2, the children start developing their reading and writing skills in the language and become more confident in performing role-plays and re-telling stories. By the end of Year 6, they are able to communicate on a wide range of topics such as family, school and hobbies.

Our pupils build on their French vocabulary and grammar to learn how to express themselves and share opinions. They discover French culture as well as traditions from the French-speaking world. Learning French helps them reflect on their own language and develop a better understanding of the world and a respect of other cultures.
