For all children in Penwortham to be safe and feel safe in the school. Exemplary behaviour is consistently nurtured by knowledgeable and well trained staff to create a learning environment where all children thrive and succeed.
At Penwortham we have a positive reinforcement approach to behaviour and anti-bullying. The school community follow an established and robust policy of praise, reward and sanctions when necessary. This policy is informed and underpinned by:
- The core values of the school
- The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - in line with our status as a Unicef Gold Rights Respecting School
- The six principles of nurture which reflects our position as a recognised Nurturing School.
What does this look like in action?
As a Nurturing School children are always be greeted by staff and welcomed into safe learning environments. Any children who need some additional time or support to settle will be paired with a member of staff from the ELSA or Place2Be team.
The first classroom activities are selected to support wellbeing and positive starts to the school day. These include singing assemblies, reading for pleasure and 5-a-day Fitness.
House points are used throughout the school day to reinforce positive learning behaviours, the core values of the school and to recognise pupils who are upholding the rights of themselves and others as part of our Unicef Rights Respecting Gold culture. The house point system is used consistently by all staff who use specific praise to recognise pupil achievement e.g. I have noticed how much resilience you have shown with that calculation, keep it up and you will earn a house point.
The vision for our playground and dinner centre is for every child to be seen, heard, included and free from bullying behaviours. Our school anti-bullying motto was created by the children: be kind and we can all shine. To achieve this, playtimes are well structured, well supervised and underpinned by the house point system alongside the school games values which the children are familiar with from their PE lessons. These values are embedded and have supported our success in achieving School Games Gold every year since 2016.
At times some the choices and actions of some children warrant an extra special acknowledgement and celebration. This might be:
- A 'Super Owl Certificate' if a child has made it to the top of the pupil designed class behaviour chart;
- A 'Star of the Week Certificate' awarded in weekly celebration assembly;
- A 'Positive Postcard' which is sent home via the post to mark a significant achievement or consistent display of excellence.
As a Nurturing School we understand children individually, developmentally and understand that at times their behaviour is communicating an unmet need. We will always strive to identify and support this need but also have clear and proportionate consequences for choices and behaviour which we deem unacceptable.
We work effectively in partnership with the below organisations to ensure that our staff are highly skilled and supported to meet the social-emotional needs of all pupils.
Nurture UK help to unlock pupils’ potential, by removing barriers to learning.
The six principles of Nurture have been implemented across our school since 2020. Since then we have witnessed the positive impact that they have had on the school community and the inclusivity of our provision overall.
